McLaren's Greatest F1 Cars Ranked

MP4/4 won 15 of 16 races. MCL39 won the 2025 championship. Ranking every significant McLaren F1 car from 1966 to the present day.

McLaren is one of the most successful constructors in Formula 1 history. Founded by New Zealand racing driver Bruce McLaren in 1963, the team has won 9 Constructors' Championships and 12 Drivers' Championships. McLaren's history is one of extraordinary highs — the MP4/4's near-perfect 1988 season, the Senna-Prost rivalry, the 2024–2025 championship double — and painful lows, including a decade in the midfield from 2013 to 2023. This ranking covers the cars that defined McLaren's story.

1. McLaren MP4/4 (1988) — The Greatest Racing Car Ever Built

The McLaren MP4/4 is the most statistically dominant Formula 1 car in history. In 1988, it won 15 of 16 races — a win rate of 93.75% that has never been equalled. Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost drove it to a combined 15 wins, 15 pole positions, and 10 fastest laps. Senna won the Drivers' Championship with 90 points; Prost finished second with 87 points (under the points system of the time, which counted only the best 11 results). McLaren won the Constructors' Championship with 199 points — more than double the second-placed Ferrari's 65 points.

The MP4/4 was designed by Gordon Murray and Steve Nichols. Murray's key insight was to lower the car's centre of gravity by using a longitudinally mounted Honda RA168E 1.5-litre turbocharged V6 engine. The engine produced approximately 685 HP in race trim and over 900 HP in qualifying specification. The car's aerodynamics were clean and efficient, and its reliability was exceptional — it retired from only one race all season (both cars at Monza, while leading). The MP4/4 is the benchmark against which all dominant F1 cars are measured.

2. McLaren MP4/13 (1998) — Häkkinen's First Championship

The McLaren MP4/13 ended McLaren's nine-year championship drought. Mika Häkkinen drove it to the 1998 World Drivers' Championship, winning 8 races and defeating Michael Schumacher's Ferrari by 14 points. The MP4/13 was powered by a Mercedes-Benz FO110G 3.0-litre V10 engine and featured the distinctive silver livery that McLaren had adopted when Mercedes became their engine partner in 1995. The car was designed by Adrian Newey — who had joined McLaren from Williams in 1997 — and was considered the most aerodynamically sophisticated car of its era.

3. McLaren MCL39 (2025) — The Modern Champion

The McLaren MCL39 is the most successful car of the current ground effect era. Lando Norris drove it to the 2025 World Drivers' Championship — his first title and McLaren's first Drivers' title since Häkkinen in 1999. McLaren also won the 2025 Constructors' Championship, making it back-to-back titles after winning the 2024 Constructors' Championship with the MCL38. The MCL39 was the culmination of a multi-year development programme that transformed McLaren from a midfield team in 2020 to the dominant force in F1 by 2025.

4. McLaren MP4/6 (1991) — Senna's Third Championship

The McLaren MP4/6 was the last Honda-powered McLaren to win a championship. Ayrton Senna drove it to his third and final World Drivers' Championship in 1991, winning 7 races. The MP4/6 was powered by a Honda RA121E 3.5-litre V12 engine — one of the most powerful naturally aspirated engines of its era. The car was designed by Neil Oatley and featured a semi-automatic gearbox, which was becoming standard in F1 at the time. Senna's 1991 championship was his last — he died at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix while driving for Williams.

5. McLaren MP4/4 Predecessor: MP4/2 (1984) — Lauda's Last Title

The McLaren MP4/2 launched the most dominant period in McLaren's history. In 1984, Niki Lauda and Alain Prost won 12 of 16 races between them. Lauda won the championship by just half a point — the smallest margin in F1 history — from Prost. The MP4/2 was powered by a TAG-Porsche 1.5-litre turbocharged V6 engine and was the first McLaren to use a carbon fibre monocoque chassis (introduced with the MP4/1 in 1981). McLaren won the Constructors' Championship with 143.5 points — nearly double the second-placed Ferrari.

6. McLaren MCL38 (2024) — The Championship Comeback

The McLaren MCL38 won the 2024 Constructors' Championship — McLaren's first Constructors' title since 1998. The car was driven by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who won 6 and 3 races respectively. The MCL38 was particularly strong in the second half of the season, with McLaren's development rate outpacing all rivals. The 2024 championship was the beginning of McLaren's return to the top of F1 after a decade in the midfield.
