FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile)

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) is the governing body of Formula 1 and many other motorsport disciplines worldwide. The FIA is responsible for setting and enforcing the technical and sporting regulations of Formula 1, appointing race directors and stewards, and ensuring the safety of drivers, marshals, and spectators. The FIA was founded in 1904 and is headquartered in Paris, France. The FIA's president is elected by the member clubs. The FIA works with the Formula One Group (commercial rights holder) and the teams to govern the sport. The FIA's technical regulations specify every aspect of the F1 car — dimensions, weight, engine specifications, safety requirements, and aerodynamic rules.

The FIA was founded in 1904 as the Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus (AIACR). It was renamed the FIA in 1946. The FIA has been the governing body of Formula 1 since the inaugural 1950 World Championship. The FIA's relationship with the teams and commercial rights holder has sometimes been contentious.
