Racing Line

The optimal path through a corner that minimises lap time.

What is Racing Line?

The racing line is the optimal path through a corner (or series of corners) that minimises lap time. The classic racing line involves a late apex — the driver approaches the corner from the outside, turns in late to hit the apex (the innermost point of the corner), and exits wide. This technique allows the driver to carry the maximum speed through the corner and accelerate earliest on the exit. The racing line is not always the shortest path — it is the path that allows the highest average speed. Different corners require different approaches — some corners have early apexes, others have late apexes. Understanding and executing the optimal racing line is a fundamental skill for F1 drivers.

History in Formula 1

The concept of the racing line has been part of motorsport since the beginning. The late apex technique was popularised by racing drivers in the 1950s and 1960s. Modern F1 drivers use data analysis and simulation to optimise their racing lines.
