Monocoque

A monocoque (French for "single shell") is a structural design where the outer skin of the chassis bears the structural loads, rather than an internal frame or skeleton. In Formula 1, the monocoque is the central structural element of the car — it houses the driver, forms the survival cell in a crash, and provides mounting points for the engine, suspension, and aerodynamic elements. The first monocoque in F1 was the Lotus 25 of 1962, designed by Colin Chapman. The introduction of carbon fibre monocoques in 1981 (McLaren MP4/1) revolutionised F1 safety — carbon fibre is much stronger and lighter than aluminium. Modern F1 monocoques are made from carbon fibre and can withstand enormous crash forces while protecting the driver.

The monocoque concept was introduced to F1 by Colin Chapman with the Lotus 25 in 1962. The aluminium monocoque replaced the traditional tubular space frame, saving weight and improving rigidity. The carbon fibre monocoque was introduced by McLaren in 1981 (MP4/1, designed by John Barnard). Carbon fibre monocoques are now universal in F1 and have saved many lives.
